Protests Swell in Egypt

On the second anniversary of the start of the "Arab Spring", Eyptian unrest swells into open protests against the government. In addition, the controversial decision to execute footballers sparked further discontent.

On 27 January, "President Mohamed Morsi has announced a state of emergency in three cities near Egypt's Suez Canal, following four days of civil unrest that have left at least 40 dead and over 500 injured."
